Here is an article that I have saved for about a year that deals with celebrity baby names. I am always intrigued at the reasons why people name their children what they do. Truth be told, I’m a huge fan of weird names. I like to stick out myself, having six “Carrie”s on my dorm floor in college was a blow to my ego. That was when I started going by “Karianne” to put a little distance between me and the rest of the herd.
Before I even decided to have children, I had names picked out for them. Now, coming to a concensus on names with Chris wasn’t too difficult as, since he is a “Christopher” he also wanted our children to have uncommon names. Little did we know that our version of uncommon would be more common than we thought.
With our first pregnancy, we thought that we were going to have a boy. The name that we liked? Spike. No kidding. And boy did we get flack about that, but we loved the name. Since our Spike died, so did the name for us. We had already used it.
Now with Ivy, we loved the name because it was simple and traditional at the same time. We didn’t know any Ivys. Our families loved it, although we did get some backlash from his mom, but that was to be expected. But now, I see the name Ivy quite a bit. It gets under my skin, but there isn’t anything you can do about it, right? Thankfully we all have the opportunity to choose what we will call our children.
For Becken, we loved the name “Bec” to go with “Ivy”. Simple, yet unique. But when my dad died while we were waiting for him to come home from Ethiopia, I had the idea to add in the “ken” in honor of my dad. My dad would have loved this. Chris was happy with the idea as well, so that is his name.
The most difficult part in coming up with names for us, was my connection to the child care that my mom and sister own. My mom has owed it for almost 30 years and can you imagine how many kids have come through there? It seemed that any name Chris would come up with, I knew a child or a parent with that name along with a story as well, so I’d veto it right away.
I am glad for this connection though because I am first to see trends as they are happening. Ivy and Becken are the only ones with those names on our attendances. Don’t even get me started on how many Isabelles and Kaidens we have!
