This week was a rough one. Hormones and stress don’t mix too well in my life and this week was a rough blend of both. My moods are normally pretty uneven, but on weeks like this they give new meaning to peaks and valleys. Anything that seems like it might work, is worth trying for the sake of my soul and the sake of my little family.
Tuesday morning already started out crazy, then a tiny little phone conversation threw me over the edge. Nothing bad, nothing really at all, just an interaction that I overreacted to, which is not at all uncommon for me in hormonal times like these. In the magazine that I was reading, there was a blurb about How to Break Out of a Bad Mood. I pounced on it!
According to Redbook magazine, and Hyla Cass, M.D.,
“there’s one easy way to get a pick-me-up anytime, anywhere: Get moving. Take a brisk 10-minute walk, or jog up and down stairs for five minutes. Exercise sends a shot of oxygen to your brain and boosts endorphins in you bloodstream – both of which short-circuit crankiness. So when you’re so grouchy that even you’re annoyed with you, do yourself (and everyone around you) a favor: Take a hike.
As luck would have it, I read this mid-morning, right before Chris walked in the door with an unexpected day off. Golf? I knew myself well enough that golf and I would not be a successful mix, but I wanted to be outside doing something. We ended up trying out a newer course in our town. He golfed, and I walked along. The quiet, the fresh air and the exercise was the exact remedy I needed to continue with the day. I’m not saying that the rest of the week went smoothly, it did not. I did have an extra way to handle it though.
