Clomid and Migraines

Dark Day on the Sea (c) Lynda Bernhardt

When I was taking the hormone Clomid, I struggled with migraines. Not every woman experiences this side effect, but it is quite a challenge for those of us who do.

I would experience a migraine the first day on the pills and then the first day off. I believe this was due to my body adjusting to the presence and then absence of the hormones. I would feel irritable and aggressive. During that stage of my life, I was a very passive person, so some people were taken aback by my sudden aggressiveness.

Fluorescent lighting “hurt” my head, so going to work on migraine days was a real challenge. Whenever my migraine days fell on a weekend, it helped to spend most of the day in bed either asleep or awake with my eyes closed. With my migraine days being spaced 5 days apart (first day on the five-day regiment and then the first day off), I was guaranteed to have to go to work at least one of those days. I tried to keep the workdays as calm as possible.

My doctor prescribed barbiturates to help me endure the headaches. They did help to level out the pain, but I felt “off” while taking them. I later switched from the generic Clomid to the brand name Serophone, which caused migraines that were less intense. I was able to manage the pain by taking over-the-counter Excedrin Migraine tablets instead of the barbiturates. I tried other brands of over-the-counter migraine medication, but Excedrin Migraine always worked the best.

If you struggle with migraines while taking hormones, go easy on yourself. Rest as much as you can. I found that taking naps made the pain more bearable. Less time awake meant less time aware of the pain, but also the naps helped my body to recuperate faster.

I have since learned that there are certain yoga positions that can help with migraines. I do not know if they will help a hormone-induced migraine or not, but it is worth a shot, right? Check out this website for some yoga positions that can help with your migraines. See also this article about how researchers have found that some yoga positions can help with migraines.
