Courtney and Angela

When Courtney B. Vance and Angela Basset were married I was so happy for the both of them. Mostly I was a fan of hers, but now that Courtney is on Law and Order Criminal Intent, I've become a fan of his as well.

While searching through the Oprah.com archives for articles on infertility, their story popped up. I had no idea that they were having difficulties for as long as they were, and I really had no idea about them becoming parents of twins. Here is the article: Courtney and Angela

After years and years of trouble, Angela was finding out about the use of a surrogate. After discussing it with Courtney and thinking about it, they decided to go ahead. They now have a son and a daughter that are twins.

While I was reading the article, something that Angela said really struck a cord with me.

When Courtney and Angela decided to start a family, they eventually turned to fertility specialists for help. After seven years of visiting in vitro specialists, getting shots and other treatments, the news was not encouraging.

Still, Angela remained optimistic. "I wanted it, but I couldn't hold onto it so that I was devastated when it didn't happen," she says. "I had to remain hopeful and resilient and, 'Okay, let's do it again.'"

I hear a lot of women discussing the fact that they need to remain hopeful. But when Angela added in "resilient" it was a perfect fit. A lot of times I felt that I was a glutton for punishment everytime I tried to conceive again. But to reframe it into her words is so much healthier. I was resilient. Viewing myself in that light is much more positive than the image that I originally had. But now I can add resiliency to list of qualities by going through infertility. I'll take any good that can come out of those years.
