A lot is said about foods that you should avoid when you are trying to conceive – anything with caffeine, things that will make you fat since one of the most common pieces of advice is to lose weight, and everything alcoholic. The messages are quite mixed when it comes to what you actually should eat. Some recommend pineapple and others vehemently advise against it saying it will cause uterine contractions (for the record I drank pineapple juice during the two week wait of my IVF cycle). New studies say that carbs in moderation are good while you can also find research that says to try no carbs or even to carb load.
There is one eating suggestion that I can definitely get on board with -the advice that women trying to get pregnant have a full fat dairy serving daily. That means that there are some that actually encourage a small nightly bowl of non low fat ice cream, whole millk or full fat yogurt. Foods that for me are some of my absolute favorite that I really don’t like in the lower fat variety anyway. So, someone telling me that it might help to eat the good stuff is definitely exciting news. Like everything else, there are experts that say that for those with PCOS the insulin resistance aspect could counteract the benefits of dairy and of course the caution that it won’t help if there are issues with fallopian tubes or male factor.
Nevertheless, actually being encouraged to enjoy something slightly decadent and oh so good in this whole process is definitely something to try. You have probably heard that daily dairy has been linked to weight loss as well so I see no harm in giving it a shot. As you lament the loss of your morning coffee, or having to say no to a summer cocktail maybe you can instead look forward to a breakfast accompanied by a full fat yogurt or an after dinner treat of a bowl of whole milk ice cream, and help your fertility in the process. There always seems to be a contradiction when it comes to fertility diet recommendations but in this case, if you are anything like me, you’ll take any excuse to have a little Ben and Jerry’s!
