Endometriosis

In my last post, Laparoscopy, I talked about having a laparoscopy so Dr. F could determine the cause of my infertility. The results shocked me. I had never experienced particularly painful periods, so my fertility doctors from my hometown had ruled out endometriosis as a possible cause. They were wrong.

Dr. F found a significant amount of endometriosis, which is uterine tissue that is located outside of the uterus, and scar tissue all over my reproductive organs. As part of the procedure, he had removed all of the endometriosis and scar tissue, so my organs were as good as new. I jokingly called this my “spring cleaning.”

Dr. F said that I had a large amount of endometriosis on my fallopian tubes, which made it significantly harder for me to conceive. When I ovulated, my fallopian tubes needed to move around to create the suction necessary to move the egg out of the ovary and into the uterus. My fallopian tubes were covered with so much endometriosis that they were stagnant, so it would be very hard to conceive without removing the tissue. Now that the endometriosis and scar tissue had been removed, my chances of conceiving were much better.

Unfortunately, by this time in my life, I was jaded about the whole fertility process. I did not believe that it was possible for my body to conceive, even with this “spring cleaning” being performed. I went through the motions of trying to conceive for the next five months, but my heart was not in it. I was in a new job in a new city, and I had no local friends to lean on. I had to confide in another boss about why I needed to leave work early and come in late so frequently.

After five tries, I was finished. I was ready to put infertility behind me once and for all and never look back.
