How do you feel about fertility advertisements on the radio? I personally do not like them. Yes, I know there is a need for them. There are certainly enough fertility-challenged couples out there looking to find a fertility center. However, I found them particularly challenging when I was going through fertility treatments myself.
What really used to get to me in those ads was the sound of babies. There was one radio ad in my city that ended with the laughter of a little baby, and it tore me up inside every time I heard it. As soon as the ad started, I would run to my radio and turn it off. It hurt too much to listen to that precious sound. What was harder was when I heard the ad in a public place so I did not have access to the radio to avoid hearing the ad.
Television ads would sometimes bother me, too, although with those it was more about seeing the beautiful baby taking up the entire screen of the television set. That hurt as well, but I would just flip the channel to solve the problem.
For some reason, printed ads or on-line ads would not bother me. I think it is because those ads were just relaying information. They would say the name of the clinic and provide a phone number or Internet link so you could learn more about them. Those ads did not have cute little babies making sweet noises, so seeing those ads did not get to me like the ones on the radio did.
To this day, I will hear a radio ad for a fertility clinic and bristle, even though I am no longer trying to conceive. I will hear the dramatic music playing as the announcer talks about this clinic having a high pregnancy success rate, and I will think to myself, “Good thing I didn’t use your clinic or I would have driven down your stats!!” LOL
I know that fertility clinics need to advertise, and radios reach many people. I get that those ads are “necessary evils.” I will just never like them.
