On my personal blog, I participate in a meme called Thursday Thirteen. Today as I was constructing my post, I was surprized at some of the things that came up in my semi stream of consciousness writings. I would like to share it with you.
Here is a list of things that “call my name”. Not things that I worry about, but things that are kind of in the background always vying for a spare moment. My sister calls it, “listening to the angel and the devil on my shoulders”. For me, they just call my name over and over.
1. Cancer. “Kari, I know your name.”
2. My credit card. “Sweetie, isn’t that pretty? You would look so cute in that. We have the money. You’ll pay it off at the end of the month.”
3. AIDS Orphans. “Mommy. Help me.”
4. The treadmill. “Um, you spent a lot of money on me and now I’m sitting here? No wonder why your clothes don’t fit anymore. I’m the last thing you should neglect.”
6. The computer. “You know how much fun I am. You can always pawn off our time together as work you know”
7. The environment. “I’m dying. You could help so much more but you don’t do enough.”
8. My fertility. “You know, I’m not going to be around forever. I could already be gone, but you just ignore me month after month. You aren’t getting any younger. Are you sure that you want to adopt the rest of your kids?
9. My car. “Are you ever going to change my oil? You think about it every day and still I suffer. Don’t you know how sick I could get without regular maintenance?”
10. My Nana. “I love you baby. Just call whenever you get a chance.”
11. My mind. “Aren’t you bored? You aren’t pregnant or adopting this year, let’s go back to school. Let’s finish our Bachelor’s. Let’s get certified as a hypnotherapist. Let’s go to facial school. Let’s read all of the Booker Prize winners. Let’s learn sign language. Let’s remodel the house. Let’s try to pay down the mortgage.”
12. My art journal. “I’m the most fun that you create on your own. You feel so great after spending time with me. I want to play! Let’s play!”
13. My bathtub. “I’m clean. I’m warm to almost hot. I smell so good. You need a break. Come on in and I’ll take care of you.”
