I was thinking about New Year's Resolutions today. I don't think that I normally make a resolution, but if you can define a resolution as a goal, then I guess that I do. I make general goals that I would like to see happen in my year and then work towards them throughout the months.
In this frame I have reduced my debt from huge amounts as a 20 year old, to almost no debt in my 30s. I have worked toward working less hours. Reading more. Learning something new for my business, my family or myself. And these were all doable. But what about fertility? Can fertility be a goal for the infertile? Can you resolve to become fertile in 2007?
I am thinking of all of the women who are deciding to try to conceive this year. And according to some statistics that I've heard 1 or more out of 5 will fail. And so next year, will these women resolve again to have a baby biologically?
Maybe changing a fertility challenging habit could be the resolution. Stopping smoking. Losing or gaining weight. But mostly, the resolution that would be most helpful would be learning to let go. Because infertility is one of the most uncontrolled processes in life. You realize early on that there really isn't much that you can do personally to change it.
Is a resolution a wish? If so, then the fertility wish would work. But can you actively pursue fertility with the ferver of paying off debts? Or losing weight? Not from what I've heard or experienced.
So for the women who may be wishing for fertility this year, I wish you luck in 2007. May we all have the children that we are wanting, when we want, and how we want.
