The first week of fertility treatments is very busy if you are using hormones. You need to contact your doctor right away to call in a prescription for whatever hormones you are taking at the beginning of the month. Then, you need to make sure you start taking the hormones on the correct day of your cycle.
When I was taking Clomid, I needed to begin taking the pills between days 2 through 6 of my cycle and then stop taking the drug after 5 days. Logistically, this meant that I had to call the doctor to let him know on what day Aunt Flo (AF) had arrived. This was always emotionally painful for me, so I had to choke back tears as I relayed this information. Then, I would ask the doctor to phone in the prescription for my next round of Clomid.
While I was taking the generic version of Clomid, I also had to take barbiturates to help me endure the migraine that always struck my first day on and then my first day off the Clomid. I needed a prescription for those, too, so I would remind the doctor to phone in this prescription as well.
After calling the doctor, I had to find the time to swing by the drug store to pick up the medication. Logistically, this was not always easy because I was working full-time. Because of the importance of the timing, I could not always wait until the weekend to run this errand. I just had to find a way to work it out.
I generally took the Clomid from Days 2 through 6 or Days 3 through 7 of my cycle, which meant that I got to experience two migraines during that first week. (Not everyone reacts this way to Clomid, thank goodness, and switching to the brand name Serophene helped quite a bit.)
I set up my work schedule so that I was not covering anything very important on my "migraine days." I could not afford to miss two days of work every month to nurse a migraine, so I would set aside busy-work projects for those days. It was very hard for me to focus on my "migraine days," so I reserved those days for filing and other basic tasks that would not take much concentration. Fortunately, I had a very understanding boss who supported this strategy.
The irritability from the hormones helped to alleviate the grief from not getting pregnant the prior month. I was too ornery and angry to cry.
