My MAN FERTILITY sidekick (i.e., my husband) was helping me test run some shaving products because most commercial preparations have chemicals like parabens (which act as xenobiotics, artificial estrogens, hormones) that are bad for fertility, and they have a lot of other things like chemical foaming agents and artificial fragrances that are just bad for you, period.
So we found some stuff that smelled great, worked, great, ta-dah! I was all set to reveal it here on these pages, but then I noticed that one of the ingredients was St. John’s wort extract (albeit, organic). The alarm bell did not go off immediately, St. John’s wort is currently in the “good for fertility” column in my book. It was my doctor, actually who put me on St. John’s wort to help build up my uterine lining as clinical blood tests have shown my serotonin level to be low. Serotonin also regulates mood, which is why many people take St. John’s wort as “nature’s prozac.” Fertilitywise, this versatile herb affects serotonin in a way that helps promote the thickness of the uterine lining.
However, some dim bell did go off in my head, and I did recall that St. John’s wort is contraindicated for men because it can reduce sperm motility. So as much as he liked this product (and I liked the natural lime-y smell!), I can’t recommend it for anyone actively trying to get pregnant.
It’s a good lesson that what’s good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander…
But if fertility is NOT a worry, I would definitely suggest these products. I’ve found that unfortunately, with commercial products, it is the chemicals that make them work well, make them slippery, etc., etc., and some of the natural products don’t last as well, smell funny, don’t foam. But partly we just have to redefine our expectations. Just because something foams up like Santa’s beard doesn’t mean it works better, we’ve just come to expect foam to mean it’s working. My husband gets a lot of ingrown hairs and things and he’s very picky about his shave stuff and he gives Miessence SHAVING GEL and AFTER SHAVE BALM the big thumbs (drills) up for anyone not immediately trying to conceive. They work really well (I can attest to nice, smooth cheeks), smell great, and hm…..might even put you in a better mood.
