Newly Approved Birth Control

I mentioned last week that I am changing birth control this month. But the landscape keeps changing and I'm glad that there are options to hopefully work for all of us when we need birth control.

While trying to get pregnant, I kept thinking about all of the money and all of the years wasted on birth control. But honestly, I think that I would have made the same choices over again. Birth control provided me with a peace of mind that I needed to grow into the person that I am today. If I would have added in the anxiety of wondering if I was pregnant when I wasn't trying to become a mom, I wonder if that growth would have occured.

There will now be another birth control option available in the US this year.

A birth-control pill that may eliminate a woman's monthly menstrual period won U.S. approval on Tuesday, health officials said. Lybrel, made by drugmaker Wyeth, is meant to be taken every day to indefinitely stop monthly menstrual bleeding and prevent pregnancy. It contains two hormones widely used in other oral contraceptives.

Wyeth said Lybrel should be available in pharmacies in July

I am a fan of menstrual manipulation, as my premenstrual symptoms are severe. Although the side effects of Lybrel would cause me to think twice.

It takes time, however, for periods to be suppressed, and most women will have intermittent bleeding or spotting during the first year of use, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

"The convenience of having no scheduled menstruation should be weighed against the inconvenience of unscheduled bleeding or spotting," an FDA statement said.

Yuck! But I do believe that one of my sister's would opt for this as well as a few of my cousins. It all comes down to what you feel you can handle and what the trade off would be.
