Organic Fashion — BAMBOOSA !!

March 8th, 2006

With all that talk about cancer and toxins and things that are bad for you and your fertility, good news: BAMBOOSA.

I still haven’t found any makeup for the rare occasions I need it, but I’m pleased to have discovered the closest things I’ve found to perfect clothes. Actually, it wasn’t I, it was my husband who first got me a few pieces for Valentine’s Day. He shares my eco-organic vibe, but we were blown away by how beautiful (and reasonable) the stuff is.

From my persnickety fashion point of view, I love how the fabric drapes, feels like a combo of silk/tencel, and last weekend, I had to travel to do a lecture and so I just smushed that very V-neck pictured into my bag, hung it up when I got to the hotel, and I was good to go.

But the magical thing about it, is BAMBOO. We have been on a bit of a bamboo craze lately (new bamboo cutting board, for example) because bamboo is also good for the environment. It’s the earth’s most sustainable plant, needs no replanting, grows without fertilizer or pesticides and is basically organic by nature. Plus, you can eat it. What more could you want from a single plant?

I don’t know who came up with the idea of bamboo fabric, but it’s one whose time has come. Bamboo fabric is naturally antibacterial (forget those nasty aluminum filled anti-perspirants), breathable, and dries quickly, as I found out when I accidentally glopped some Ethiopian food on it–wet towel was all it took, good as new.

Again, I’ve tried a few other bamboo clothes, but I particularly like Bamboosa stuff, among other things because the X-small actually fits, as I have the typical 98-pound weakling Asian body types (beyond size 0 at Banana Republic–and People, I’m not that small. It’s also quite stylin’. And the dual-purposeness of it make it perfect for a day of teaching and then running off to yoga, no kidding! Busy parents take note! This stuff’ll take you from morning spit-up to afternoon meetings, to the gym in style.

And, as you know, I am partial to things that nurture my save-the-planet vibe. Bamboosa supports One Percent for the Planet, a global conservation group. And the clothes and accessories are a lot more reasonable than you’d think. We just bought a bunch of baby hats for presents, and I’ll be test-driving some UNDERWEAR for this column. Despite global warming, it’s not yet hot enough here to wear their cute, undyed bootie socks. The importance of chemical free-underwear will be discussed at length. Stay tuned!
