This picture is Licette Comanzo Walker, the owner of Comanzo and Company Speciality bakers (photo from Rhode Island Monthly). This is not just some posed picture to make you think some nice caring person is baking your cookies–these really are her cookies.
She used to sell her cookies from home to a local coffee shop that I used to frequent. Now they’re in fancy schmancy places such as Whole Foods and Oprah’s green room.
I do occasionally have a bad habit of eating while I write, but these cookies (English toffee, Spiced Chai, Caramel Apple–that one’s particularly satisfying) are organic, made of the finest ingredients, and Licette seems to share the philosophy about seeking out small, passionate suppliers (small family run farms for their real butter, etc.) of all her ingredients that I try to make as a cornerstone of my own shopping (we just rejoined our organic food-share) and this column in general.
Again, a diet heavy in refined carbs is never great for your fertility. But I never said NO-carb diet was the way to go, either. I don’t believe in total austerity in life–what’s the fun? My husband was particularly fond of their “Sassy Curry Coconut cookie.” A little spice, a little sweet, a little savory. He duly reported to me (long-suffering tester that he is) that one teeny weeny cookie was enough of a delightful snack, instead of a handful of, I don’t know, Chips Ahoy?
They also have a new line of savory snacks, baked not fried, that are vegan–cool!
So if you’re going to treat yourself, make it a good one. Look for these guys in your local specialty shop or check out www.comanzo.com.
P.S. for you condiments-in-the-fridge-for-years types, their biscotti (which I have not tried) supposedly aren’t as dry as those ones that break your teeth, but they also last a whole year on the shelf. Not bad!
