flowertakingcharge 01 Review of Taking Charge of Your Fertility

Okay, so the cover is a bit flowery, but this book is a great resource for any woman, not just those who want to get pregnant. It’s basically about “fertility awareness”–and with every woman, her cycle is different–and you can use this knowledge in many ways: getting pregnant, not getting pregnant, anticipating which parts of your cycle might be causing symptoms of PMS, etc., and possibly adjusting your lifestyle/diet accordingly.

There are also chapters of gynecological health and menopause, as well. Straightforward, no nonsense, nice index, easy to read. It is also funny, in a big sisterly way, and graphic. Thank goodness someone finally will show what fertile cervical mucous looks like. And the collection of different basal body temperature charts (otherwise known at BBTs–a simple, effective, cheap way to track your fertility) was also helpful to compare, to make sure you’re doing it right, and also because certain patterns can also be indicative of fertility problems (e.g., an anovulatory cycle).

It’s the best guide I’ve seen since the old Our Bodies, Ourselves, in fact, I so kind of miss some of those cool hippie pictures and its unapologetic feminist bent. But TCOYF is fun and informative in its own way. My book even came with a CD-ROM of “fertility software,” while I remember not even yet having a computer (in college) when I bought my copy of Our Bodies, Ourselves.

p.s. keeping up with our on-line times, TCOYF also has its own website.
