I spent the day on Sunday in front of the television catching up on episodes of the series on USA called The 4400. I hadn’t ever watched or heard of the series before I started to catch up on watching my unwatched episodes of Law and Order SVU. Chris teases me about my phases in tv watching and in food. Once I get hooked, I’m hooked. Until I get sick of the show or sick of the food that I had been obsessed with.
If any of you watch this emmy nominated show, you’ll agree that it isn’t easy to describe. Interesting pilot episodes that lead into many character developments and plot lines that change quickly. It reminds me a lot of Star Trek The Next Generation crossed with X-Files crossed with Quantum Leap. Well, now I’m hooked and I can’t wait until the season premiere next week.
One of the major reasons that I am loving the show is the portrayal of Lily and Richard, an interracial couple. I’m trying to think of any other show that I watch that has featured this. Actually, maybe ER a few times but they haven’t continued the story line as far as the 4400 does.
Watching the show and thinking about the blog as well, I even came up with a fertility aspect to the show. Lily’s fertility is fine before her abduction, she has a 6 month old daughter. When she is returned after 11 years she finds out that she is pregnant but has no idea how she became that way. Ultimately she gives birth to Richard’s daughter, Isabelle who has extreme powers even in the womb to protect her mother. For those of you who don’t watch the show, this must mean that our fertility in the future is well.
Watching Lily, Richard, and Isabelle on the television, portraying a healthy family makes me think that maybe all of our television programming isn’t so biased after all. Even this one show gives me hope.

Hi there – the computer quit thinking that I was a spammer after all and let me in this afternoon. Who knows!? Anyway, thanks for sharing a “positive” that you encountered in the media. I want to make a point of looking for things like that, especially as our family expands. -MP
