The “Joy” of Clomid

By this time, we were moving into the Fall, and I was ready to have an intrauterine insemination (IUI), get pregnant, and move on with my life. I wanted to announce our pregnancy over Christmas. This was going to be just perfect.

Unfortunately, Dr. M was not ready to try an IUI just yet. Instead, he wanted to try one month on Clomid and see how my body responded. He instructed us to try to conceive “the natural way” and see what happened.

Dr. M told me that some women might experience a headache or a few other side effects but that the side effects would not be that bad. To quote my six-year-old son: “Liar, liar, pants on fire.”

Before I launch into my experience with Clomid, I will share the experiences of some of my friends who have used the drug. One friend felt no side effects at all. I know several other women who experienced some side effects that were not that bothersome.

Another friend did not need to use the drug long because she conceived her twins (one boy and one girl) while taking Clomid. According to my doctor, one in ten women who become pregnant using Clomid conceives twins. So, there are a lot of good things to be said about this drug.

My experience was quite different. Calling what I experienced a “headache” is like calling a lion a “cat.”

I was instructed to take the pill for 5 days in a row, starting between days 2-5 of my cycle. The first day I took the pill, I developed a debilitating migraine. After 24 hours, the migraine went away, but I felt very aggressive and irritable. The migraine returned the first day that I stopped taking the pills. The migraines were so intense that the doctor prescribed barbiturates to help get me through the pain.

About 2 weeks into my cycle, I started getting hot flashes. My friends said that I looked like a human toaster. I would be just fine and then, out of nowhere, my face would turn dark red. I would fan myself off as best I could and then, just as suddenly, my body temperature would go back to normal. Let’s just say that I feel well prepared for menopause now.

Clomid was a nightmare for me, but I was willing to endure anything to become a mother. Unfortunately, I did not conceive that month, and I faced having to take the drug again. (That is when I demanded something to treat the migraines.) Dr. M said that we would do another round of Clomid and try our first IUI.
