The Lessons of the Lilies

I hardly ever finish a book that I don’t like. I figure that time is too short to read books that don’t grab you from the get-go. I can usually get a feeling from a book soon after I start it and can make my decision to continue right away. That being said, this book proved me wrong.

The Lessons of the Lilies by Karen C. McCord is a book that chronicles her life coming to parenthood and her found faith through the process. The interesting part of this book that hooked me was not the actual story, or her telling of it. It was the inclusion of her husband’s perspective on their losses and troubles that I found so engaging. I have read quite a few books dealing with the subject of infertility and this was one of the first memoirs that I had encountered that actually had quite a bit to say from the point of view of her husband. Although she is the one retelling his part, I found it very revealing about the emotions that fathers go through in dealing with infertility and pregnancy loss.

This was also the first book that had told the story of an infertility issue being brought to the couple by the male. A lot of these books either don’t have a reason, or they focus on the female aspects of infertility. In fact, while I was reading this I was almost shocked that her husband had agreed to her telling of his medical treatments and emotions dealing with the steps of becoming parents. It was very refreshing to be reminded that there are many reasons for infertility. And these reasons can involve both the man and the woman. As my own prejudice, I think that I forget this a lot of the time.
