A reader contacted me about his blog entitled My Vasectomy Reversal. Here is how he described his blog in his e-mail:
We've blogged the entire story of our fertility trials and tribulations, from vasectomy reversal surgery, through a miscarriage, to the birth of a healthy baby boy...
I checked out his blog, and this looks like a wonderful resource for those of you who are facing fertility challenges involving a vasectomy reversal. He has also done something that I do not see on many blogs: He has provided a table of contents so you can follow his story in chronological order. As much as I love blogs, the reverse chronological method of posting can be confusing when you find a good story and want to follow it from the beginning. This blogger has done the work for you!
According to Vasectomymedical.com, 5-10% of the men who undergo a vasectomy each year will later choose to reverse the procedure. I had no idea that the number was that high. This site states that the success rate of conceiving after a vasectomy reversal is about 50%, which is higher than I would have expected. I feel for those who fall into the 50% who do not become pregnant after the procedure.
As I mentioned in my post A Different Kind of Fertility Success Story, I have a friend whose husband underwent a vasectomy reversal so that they could have a baby together. Unfortunately for them, they were never able to achieve a pregnancy after the vasectomy reversal. (Now that they are parents through adoption, they are probably grateful that they never conceived, but it was incredibly painful for them at the time.) So, as in every aspect of fertility, there are no guarantees that a vasectomy reversal will result in a successful pregnancy.
The My Vasectomy Reversal blog shows the successful side of this procedure. Even with their success, it looks like this couple did not come by parenthood easily. In addition to the surgery to reverse the vasectomy, they endured a miscarriage and fertility treatments. But isn't it great to see a happy ending?
