Yoga to Increase Fertility

Yellow Flower (c) Lynda Bernhardt

When I went to a Reiki appointment recently, I noticed a flyer called "Yoga for Fertility" posted on the bulletin board. I have gotten into yoga over the past few years, but I never did any yoga while I was going through fertility procedures. I find the thought of using yoga to assist with conception fascinating.

The flyer starts out talking about what yoga is and then talks about the frustrations of infertility. According to the flyer, the "meditative nature of yoga" can be helpful in healing both the body and the mind. It claims that the yoga class will help to "lengthen the spine," which gives more room to the reproductive organs. That's interesting. I never thought about giving my reproductive organs more room or even that doing so was possible.

The flyer says that a primary focus of the class will be "support postures to open the heart center and pelvic area." I wonder how opening up the "heart center" ties into fertility. My yoga lady tells me that I hold my tension in my shoulders (yeah, I kind of got that!!), which pulls my shoulders forward and "closes" my heart center. According to her, as I learn to open up my heart center (i.e., become more trusting), I will relax my shoulders and develop a better posture. I have been working on this for a while now, not to get pregnant but to have a healthier mind and body.

The flyer ends with the benefits of spending time with other women who are in the same boat. (Of course, their words are much more flowery.) I totally get that. I felt like the Lone Ranger when I was going through fertility procedures myself, and it would have been a comfort to know other people who were struggling with same issues.

I don't think I would have been open to a yoga class for fertility during my infertility years. I probably would have thought it was a big rip off. But if I decided to try to conceive today, I would likely sign up for this class.

I have found yoga to be an amazing healing force. I do yoga and meditation every night before I go to bed. I have struggled with insomnia for much of my life, and doing yoga before bedtime has really helped me to sleep better. Also, I find I stay much more relaxed throughout the day when I do yoga regularly. However, I don't know if doing yoga would enable a woman to conceive or not.

I have been doing yoga regularly for about 3 years while not taking birth control, and I have not conceived. I am not trying to conceive, but I am making no effort to prevent it, either. Perhaps the class focuses on different postures than I do, or perhaps conceiving a baby is just not in the cards for me.

Have any of you tried taking a class like this to help you conceive? Has it helped?
